British/Indonesian Dual Citizenship.

Post by rickyboyg » Mon Jul 02, 2012 9:36 am

Hi Everyone,

I'm a British Citizen living and working in Indonesia on a rolling yearly KITAS. I got legally married to an Indonesian woman in October 2011 and we have a baby due in August (next month).

We are aware the baby will be granted dual citizenship but the details on what we need to do are unclear. This is from the British Embassy Website for Indonesia:

Indonesia law of dual citizenships

"The new nationality law of Indonesia now permits limited dual citizenship for any child born in Indonesia to a foreign father married to an Indonesian mother. Children born after 1 August 2006 are automatically entitled to Indonesian citizenship. The birth must be notified to the Indonesian Immigration Office within 10 days or a large fine may be imposed. The Immigration Office requires the passports of both parents and the civil birth certificate of the child but you should check local requirements directly as these can be subject to change without notice. Once the passport has been issued to the child, it must be brought to the Immigration Office again for regularizing the child's immigration status. Children who were born before 1 August 2006 or under 18 years old can also acquire Indonesian nationality through registration with the relevant District Office for Justice and Human Rights"

Do we have to register with the UK Embassy or will it be automatically registered through the Indonesian Embassy?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance!

British nationality - Consular birth registration is optional. Apply for British passport.
Indonesian citizenship - contact Indonesian Immigration Office for more / exact details about the procedure.
