Claiming maternity pay while living overseas

Post by Jlgodoy » Fri Jul 20, 2012 8:18 am

I qualify to claim statuary maternity pay but will be moving overseas to Australia 6-8 weeks after my baby is born. I have read on the Directgov site that Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) that 'Once you become entitled to or if you are already getting SMP and then go abroad, your employer must pay you SMP.' Is it true that it is irrelevant where I live and that I should still continue to receive my SMP?
I know that if I don't intend to return to work that I need to give my agreed months notice as it says in my contract. Is this then something I can do while I'm in Australia?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
