do i need to send a letter with my application

Im due to send an application form for British naturalization this year,

1. is it common to include a letter to pint point my link to UK and discuss my characters etc?
2. has anyone got a sample letter, guidance, tips etc?
what are common stuff to put on the letter or page 13.
