Lost passport while on tour in France

My friend is an Indian national,studying at a prestigious university in London . While on an official trip to Paris to present research papers. The passport containing valid UK student visa was stolen while at the hotel.

A replacement passport has been secured.

What is the legal/best way to return to UK ? Please help.

My friend has the photo copy of the old passport with the student visa. Will this be accepted as a valid document if traveling/returning to UK ?

Hi, What happened to your friend now? did he get a new passport, visa?

The olympics didn't help. After a month's delay, the visa was sorted and back at London now , studying .......
