Tier2 General- Extension-BRP

Hi,
I'm planning to apply for exetension on the above category and I was not issued with a Biometric residence permit when I first entered to UK in 2009 but me and my depandents passports were issued with a vignette.Is it necessary for me to hold a BRP before I apply for tier2 general extension?
