lesbian couple, civil union, student visa

Post by craeclark » Fri Aug 31, 2012 8:14 am

Hi,

I'm an American citizen and my girlfriend, whom I'd marry if it was legally available, is a British citizen here on a work visa. She has been here since a young age, got a college education but her status ran out when she turned 21 and was kicked off her father's.
So, I was wondering if we entered into a civil union and I have over sixty thousands in assets (stock, IRA, some cash) and the requirement for a student visa is to have thirty thousand in cash, would they view her as possessing thirty thousand since a civil union means shared assets?

She is contacting her attorney, but since this is a larger discussion board I thought someone may already have encountered this situation.

Thanks...

Carley
