Confusion regarding BRP, ILR and Convention Travel Document

Post by hikz » Wed Oct 03, 2012 1:15 am

Hi everybody,
basically I was granted a 5 years leave to remain in January 2011 (refugee). Recently I was thinking of apply for a convention travel document as I need to travel, while i was filling out the application I read something about BRP. It is so confusing, I don't really understand what am I supposed to do. Am I supposed to apply for the Convention Travel Document then they'll contact me concerning the BRP or shall I apply for a BRP? Also how do I apply for a BRP and do I really need it as I have an Immigration Status Document. I am quite confused about it, I have read many articles where people were stressing the importance of obtaining a BRP and others saying that the Immigration Status Document is sufficient and others even suggested that the Immigration Status Document is like a travel document which confused me more...
I just to apply for a Convention Travel Document as soon as possible and I would like to clear this fuss about the BRP... Also, another question, I have a criminal record due to a driving offence would that affect my Travel Document application, and in the future would it affect my application for an ILR or a British passport because many people have mentioned to me that it will take 10 years for the offence to come off my records...

I have seen this beofre and if I understood it I wouldn't have posted any questions on the forum. I'm asking about its importance. Do I have to do it before applying for the convention travel document u can look at my questions again. Thanks anyway

Read the guidance notes to the application which you can find on the right hand side of the page linked to above. See page 5.

Thanks a lot for ur help I actually called my solicitor and she said that the BRP application is submitted automatically when I apply for the travel document, and the travel document application says: application for a travel document and BRP.. but thanks for ur help though...
however I still have a question regarding the impact of having a criminal record when applying for an ILR when my leave expires...
