Step-son needs to return home French permits in progress

MY step son is going to have to leave the EU for a while and return home. He messed up on one of his one of his University exams( He forgot to go to it !) He now needs to resit this and possibly re-take part of the last years course - from October to April.

He is in the Middle of applying for a Care du Sejour, he has the Récépissé de demande de carte de séjour but that will expire while he is away. How does him being out of the country for possibly 6 months affect his rights to stay here and the application in progress?
