confusing Points Based calculator

Post by z18runway » Wed Nov 21, 2012 12:04 am

Sushdmehta and Lucapooka and greenie please help

My wife wanted to check whether she scores points for her Indian degree.

UKBA says:

http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitec ... icants.pdf

How can I check if my degree/PhD meets the criteria for the English language requirement before I make an application?

You can check this using the Points Based Calculator which can be located at the following UK Border Agency web address:

http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/pointscalculator

The calculator contains information from UK NARIC as to which academic qualifications they deem to have been taught to the standard of a Bachelors or Master’s degree or PhD in the UK. ( When she contacted UKNARIC regarding the points awarded for the degree they denied having any info regarding PBCalulator and had nothing to do with PBcalulator, but the UKBA says it contains info from UK NARIC )

When you start using the calculator input any answer you wish until you get to the page on ‘English language’. Then select I have a qualification that was taught in English
On the following page ‘English language – qualifications’

enter the details of your qualification as requested including
country of award;
qualification;
institution or body:
course length,
course subject
year of award.

Actually she is applying for flr(m) and there is no option to choose, so
She intially chose Tier 1 (high value migrants), then Tier 1 (General) until she reached english skills , there she selected her qualification and other details,

she earned 30 points

Second time she chose Tier 1( High-Value migrants) then Tier 1 (Entrepreneur ), then step by step until she reached english skills, there she again selected qualification and other details,

she earned 0 points.

My Question is ,
1)Is the points Based Calculator working properly or

2)she inputting the info wrong or

3)she using wrong method to check whether she scoring points for her degree ?

Has any one got clue ?

The PBS calculator should not award different scores for the same qualification.

1. Only the developers at UKBA can answer that.
2. The one using the PBS calculator can answer that.
3. The procedure you describe seems appropriate.
Life isn't fair, but you can be!

We were in the same dilemma as my wife got the same result. 30 points for qualification and 0 points for English. We then sent a letter to the UK embassy asking them to confirm whether or not they need a statement of comparability.

We received a phone call this morning from the British embassy. They said we should either submit a statement of comparability or do an english exam.

We previously used the English assessment service from NARIC but they would not comment on level A1.

Good luck.

Ahmed, so what finally did you do? Did your wife took exam? Now my wife decided to take an English test to avoid all confusions. English test cost £80 from trinity college, name of the exam called gese a1 ,its a six minute exam. Has anyone taken the exam cheaper than this ?

My wife is outside the UK and the only exam available is IELTS but the next available sitting is 1 December then it takes 2 weeks to get the result.

We therefore have no option but to use the fast track service by NARIC to get a statement of comparability (£160 :( )

Just to let you know z18runway,

After a lengthy conversation with NARIC, they agreed to reissue an english assessment letter with a statement regarding level A1 and I'm going to submit this first the UK embassy before wasting £160 on a statement of comparability.

They told me that they only started commenting on A1 this month.

I think your wife's letter from NARIC which comments on A1 should be sufficient and it may be worthwhile checking with UKBA. If you are in the UK, you can phone a queries phone helpline.

Best wishes.

IELTS is no cheaper either (costs £100+ just for the exam) and if the exams dont go well you might fail.

If UK NARIC says that the degree course studied is equiavalent to a UK degree course and in English Medium than it should be fine.

When no one can answer the query related to points based calculator, then no use follow that, and ukba helpline is a dumbo, Each person will give different opinion but the caseworker who deals the case will apply a different set of rules, the result of which will most probably will be rejection or refusal based on not meeting the requirements. So I would rather rely on members advice and at the end will choose the less hassle one.
