UK NARIC and english requirement

Post by ahmed2020 » Thu Nov 22, 2012 10:53 am

Hello all,

I would be grateful for some clarification if any one knows.

My wife is applying for a spouse settlement visa. We applied as meeting the English language requirement based on her English-taught undergraduate degree.

We will have a letter from NARIC confirming that the degree was taught in English and they consider my wife meeting CEFR Level A1.

My question is about the need to prove that her degree is equivalent to UK degree. My wife's degree is listed in the PBS calculator and scores 30 points for qualifications (but 0 points for English). This presumably means that her degree is considered by NARIC as meeting UK standards. Can we use this as evidence that her degree is equivalent to UK standards although she is not applying under the points-based system?

I tried the UKBA helpline but they seem rude and confused themselves about the rules. The answer I got from them was that this is not a PBS application and this is what the rule says and it's up to us what to do.

There are two things in using an international degree qualification to meet the english languauge requirements.

1) The degree is equivalent to a UK degree

This will be confirmed by the UK NARIC certificate, in fact it was not 100% require. If you had printed the PDF from the PBS calculator to show that the degree is equivalent to UK degree, that would have been enough.

2) Degree was taught in English

You need a letter from the University/Institute where the degree was obtained to confirm that it was taught in English Medium.

Hope this helps.

1. If PBS calculator awards 10 points under English language section, then you do not need anything other than the certificate and print out of PBS calculator page.

If you get a letter from NARIC certifying so then you do not need anything else other than the degree certificate and the letter from NARIC.

Letter from institution / awarding body / university stating the degree was taught in English will serve no purpose.

All,
This seems to be a recurring query on English Language Requirements
for spouse visa's.

- If the qualification (at Bachelors level) is recognised in the UKBA points calculator, then no further proof is required. you need to submit the UKBA PBS print out and original degree certificate.

- If the qualification is not recognised and you still wish to claim points, then a NARIC certificate is required.

- There are two versions of the UK NARIC certificate
- Statement of Comparability (The UK NARIC fast track service is available for this option)
- English Language Assessment (No fast track service available for this option)
(Which one is applicable?)

you are all talking about points...so I assume you are refering to non spousal non family based sponsoring ?

But i am a spousal ... family based sponsoring case.
My wife has
LLB law degree taught in English .....and the cert says Bachelors Degree ...

but thats Indian Bachelors ..is that comparable to the UK Bachelors degree ?
i know the points system is not applicable to me but how do i check how many points this degree is worth and is it useful to me just to see if I still need to GO to NARICS ?

Please refer to section 4.1 4.2 and 4.3 of the link below ... although points do not apply for spouse visas, the points based calculator is what case workers will look to determine if the qualification is NARIC recognised.

Hope this helps.

I would suggest you'll have to get both certificates from NARIC

- Certificate that degree is equivalent to UK bachelors
- English Language assessment letter

This will fulfil the requirements of english language.
