German citizen marrying British Citizen

Hi All,

I would like some help, I am a British Citizen from birth and my wife is a German Citizen. Next month my wife will be moving to the UK to settle with me. Could you advise on the procedure we should follow to get her rights to live and work in the UK.

Any help will be appreciated.

She can live in the UK as a EU citizen without hindrance. After five years she may be eligible for permanent residence. She would need to exercise an EU treaty right to qualify for PR status. EU treaty rights include working or studying or being self-sufficient. If she is not working (therefore self-sufficient on her own money or your income) she would need to have comprehensive sickness insurance to be eligible to qualify for PR.

I see no reason in you sponsoring your wife, the rules have been changed to such an extent that it make no sense for a British citizen to pay for a charged application, and obtain a registration, as was previously the case, for their EEA spouse. They can no longer receive ILR after 2 years, and British passport in the third.

Let her just stick to her status as EU citizen, and provided she exercise treaty rights, she will be fine, if she chooses to live in UK as Self- Sufficient person, she will need to hold a medical insurance.

Just to make it clear - if she has no intentions to apply for a British citizenship in future, she doesn't need to do anything. Just show a passport/ID card at the border and enter.

If she do plan to apply for British citizenship in future, there are some conditions to be met (such as employment or private health insurance if not working).
