Post by aya101 » Mon Dec 03, 2012 11:26 am

What to do if a copy of marriage cert is not available ?
This is needed for a passport application. Could I get a reply ASAP .

1. Get the passport in your maiden name.

OR

2. If the person was married in Ireland, the cert is easy to get in Dublin.

OR

3. You could try a legal declaration of both parties to the marriage in front of a commissioner for oaths - I don't know if this is acceptable, but if you are from a country where there is a war at present, or some other reason why you could not get a certificate, this is sometimes acceptable in some government departments.

Note: Did you send a copy of the marriage cert to any government department in the past - if you did you can request a copy of your file under Freedom of Information and Data Protection laws, and should get a photocopy of the marriage cert which will have been held on file. This may help, as it may have been signed by the department staff 'original seen in tax office by XX'.

Why is the cert not available? this would make it easier to answer the question.

Are you applying for an Irish passport?

I always think it is worth getting several copies of your marriage certificate when you get married, if possible. Easy to do at the time, and hard to do later.
