Need help for Tax Credit

Post by zainibaba » Wed Dec 12, 2012 2:24 pm

Hi everyone
I am EEA citizen working as a self employed. My wife and child has joined me 2 months ago with EEA family permits. I have not enough income and i have right to recieve Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit, I have completed application but my wife has no NI number. We called JobCentre Plus for NI number ,they asked the purpose of NI number we replied that for Tax Credits, they told us that HMRC will generate NI number themselves.
I heard that if your partener has no NI number it could take months and months to get NI number so your application cant be processed.
If someone can advise me what to do,,
can my wife apply NI number for herself instead of HMRC apply on her behalf ?
My wife can apply NI number for job purpose and same NI number can be used for Tax Credits ?
Anyone who is in the same process can answer me because it worries me when i read the stories of other people who have not been awarded WTC for same reason ,,

there is a confusion here.

As far as I know, if you are working and have an NI and if you a partner i.e: wife who doesn't have an NI number and he/she does NOT work then as per rules you have to apply for Tax Credits jointly but the partner not having NI number should not cause any delays or issues and the Claim should proceed

I have applied for Tax Credits and my wife is a house wife with NO NI Number. They have sent a query about her NI and asked for more information which I have filled and sent away with a cover letter saying that she doesn't have an NI number at all, full stop.

It did say on the letter that if I do not provide the information then they will use the information they have to make a decision on the claim.

hope this helps.

the TCO need to see the NI refusual letter...

the TCO use an "OO######" format NI number for those who are not elegible.

all other NI numbers are generated by DWP. TCO OO numbers are limited to just 999999 numbers (one less than a million;) ) therefore they dont want to waste them if they dont have to use them... esp since DWP have access to ALOT more NI numbers.

I Agree. if you are elegible for an NI number. just say you need it for work purposes - to apply for jobs... it will speed the whole process up!
