Applied for Visa and long wait

Please help me. I lost my BRP card and passport while abroad and waiting for re-issue and 2 months now. Now my employer asking for update and threatening they will take action against me. Is there a rule so I can defend by saying am waiting for decision on visa and keep my job ? Can they take action against me or remove me from job until I get my visa ?
I really appreciate any advise on this. Please direct me to policy page of UKBA if some news published on their site.
