Residence card in hand

Dear all,
My extention of my residence permit (a scientific permit) in Czech Republic was approved on 11.12.2012. I have to go for biometrics on 14.01.2013, and then they will tell me when the residence card will be ready for collecting. However, the institute where I am working refuse to extent my work contract from 01.01.2013. They say I must show them the residence card in my hand before I will be allowed to work. Any ideas of how I can NAIL them?
