Yes, that would be fine but he has been living in the UK for two years so what reason might he have for returning to visit for several months so soon after that; it a good one, or merely a desire to continue his residence?
Here's something that may be useful to know. An Australian who spends two years in the UK on work visa might decide, at the end of his residence and to round off his time in Europe (perhaps never to return), to visit Paris (the City of Light) before heading back home. But, he first entered Europe via the UK and may have to re-enter the UK to catch his confirmed return flight to Sydney leaving from Heathrow. If re-admitted, he will be permitted a period of six months, even if his flight in due to leave in a couple of days, because six months is the standard period of visit leave that is granted. If, after re-entering the UK, he changes his mind and chooses to remain in the UK for the full six months, he has committed no crime and is not in breach of any immigration rules.
I would not advise that you make any false declarations about your intentions. The key to all of this is premeditated intention to do one thing or another and the liberty to change one's mind about that after entry, and what questions are asked of you by the admitting officer (who may simply stamp you in and and wish you good luck without asking why you are returning). Having a good face for poker also helps!
Have you heard of an e-ticket locator reference for a flight reservation that is changeable or refundable?
