Switching from Tier 4 to Tier 2

Post by tier2questions » Fri Dec 28, 2012 5:01 pm

I have a job offer for 2013, and will be switching from a Tier-4 to a Tier-2 visa.

I really would like to go travelling this summer but am worried that if my employer makes an application for me, I will be forced to give up my passport for 4+ weeks whilst UKBA process my application?

I contacted my employer to ask, and they told me not to worry about the work permit process until late May when they will contact me with instructions; however I will need to make travel arrangements in the next few months and do not want them to be disrupted!

I doubt I'll be going to the US (I am American) to apply out-of-country; however I understand that there is also an expedited single-day process from applying within the UK. I just am not sure if my employer will let me go through the expedited service, as the usual process seems to be giving them my passport for 4+ weeks whilst they handle it themselves.

Do employers typically handle visa processes themselves? What is the usual timeline?

Thanks for any advice.

The usual process is for the employer to assign a CoS to you following which you make the application for a grant of leave yourself. CoSs that have been assigned must be used within 3 months, i.e. you must apply within 3 months of the assignment date.

The processing time for postal applications is unpredictable (look at the timelines posted on this forum) but you can make a personal application by paying a higher fee. Slots for personal applications are released 6 weeks in advance, look at separate threads on this forum how to book one.
