Does my foreign marriage certificate have to be certified?

Post by harambur » Thu Jan 10, 2013 5:43 pm

Hi. I am an American citizen who recently got married in Colombia. I am now about to begin gathering the documents needed to apply for a CR1 Visa for my spouse.

One of the requirements is:

* A copy of your civil marriage certificate

My questions are:

1) Does it have to be translated?
2) Does it and the translation have to be certified?

Maybe I'm over analyzing that one statement but I want to make sure.

Thank you.

Hans.

That, alone, does not indicate anything, but surely there is a general directive in the application notes giving instructions as to what treatment is required for official instruments that are not in English and for copies of documents that are not originals?
