One person company?

Is it possible for just one person to set up a company and initially run the company?
I am planning to do this myself but wondering if I need to have a second person as director before I start?
If not, can I set the company up with a family member who does not reside in the UK and is also not a UK citizen?

Yes, it's permitted to be an individual with no other participants in the business.
