Hello,

I need information on my situation. I am a British Citizen and have duel nationality with the US. I stayed in the US with family for a year and came back into UK with a US passport. I have decided to stay here in the UK but my US passport has 6 month Visa on it. What will i do?

On my US passport it says ''Leave to enter for six months''.

What do i have to do to change that? To remain in the UK.

Why didn't you enter with your British passport?

Haven't got one. Only have a US passport.

Interesting. Does your US passport have a stamp/or anything else which states that you hold dual citizenship?

might be worth paying the 72.50 and aquiring your british passport.

once you hold your passport then you are entitled to remain on the basis you are british...

https://www.gov.uk/passport-fees - wouldnt think you need to leave the country, takes about a month for the passport to arrive.

Yes, it says i was born in the United Kingdom.

When i arrived back home in the UK i told them was only here for a couple of weeks visiting family. I have now decided to stay.

I think securing a passport is probably going to be the easiest long term route.

Technically - there's nothing wrong with a british citizen being in the UK - and if anyone stopped you and asked for proof - it'd get worked out in the end, but you might have some fun getting there.

You'll also find that any employer will want to see your right to work in the UK - which means your passport really.

Key question is when were you born - that'll help determine how easy it is to prove your citizenship.

I was born in 1987.

What can i do to change the 6 month visa that has been put on my US passport? Who exactly do i contact? Is there even anything i can do? or do i just let it run out? Then present my details i.e birth certificate.

at the time of your birth, was one of your parents either a BC or settled in the UK?

Yes, my dad is British born and my Mum is American born. Both were settled here when i was born.

Yes - you can't do anything about the 'visa' in the US passport - but the trick now is to get your UK passport.

BUT - as this link (https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-adult-pa ... pplication) shows - you're going to need to send:

On or after 1 January 1983

You must send your birth or adoption certificate and either:

- your mother’s or father’s UK birth certificate, Home Office certificate of registration/naturalisation, a British passport belonging to one of your parents that was valid when you were born or a British passport number for either parent (which you must put in section 4 of the application form)

- evidence of one of your parents’ immigration status in the UK at the time of your birth (eg a foreign passport belonging to one of your parents that was valid when you were born)

If you send documents related to your father, you must also send your parents’ marriage certificate (unless you were born or adopted on or after 1 July 2006 or adopted by a same-sex couple).

So you should gather up your documents.

I have my British Birth Certificate with both my parents names on it and i also have my fathers Birth Certificate, is that sufficient?

As above - if you send documents relating to your father - you'll need the marriage certificate.

You dont need to do anything, just stay as long as you like, you are a BC.

When you leave the UK, your passport is not stamped with any exit visa.

Ive done the same thing, I had a six month visa because my BP had expired.
