photo and Prescription Glasses

Post by boloney » Fri Jan 25, 2013 10:33 am

I when do the photos for AN as I wear Prescription Glasses I was sure it will be ok to have it done with them on (as I alway had, even photo on my passport shows them) but lady told me that because of reflection it will not be accepted by home office. will that be an issue why on my passport I have glasses on and on new photo they off? I wear them all the time, can`t see a lot without them. hope someone can advice on this.
thanks

The photo studio should be able to take a picture of yours with glasses on without reflection. I had provided the photo with glasses on for form AN. And one without for British passport.

Technically, glasses are allowed even for passports (see here and here). However, there must be absolutely no reflection on them (impossible with cheap and transitition lenses, and still very difficult with expensive plain lenses). Also, the refraction index must not be too high, or it will distort the contours (like this). Lastly, the frame must not cover any part of the face that is relevant for biometrics (i.e. the eyes or the eyebrows). In practice, all that is close to impossible, so most photo-studies strongly discourage wearing glasses for passport photos, because the IPS would probably reject them anyway.

On my previous passport, I was also wearing my glasses (with a bit of reflection in the corner). The picture even showed my face in a semi-profile ("portrait style") and - gosh! - a smile. Biometrics were not an issue at the time. Tempus fugit!

If I talk about what I did, I had my then current passport with the glasses on and the British one without. But, I think Gyfrianchgar has put it down really well as to what is accepted.
