Referrence number in british passport

Hello guys!

I called IPS today to get any updates with my passport application. They said a letter has been sent yesterday. I asked the customer service over the phone if i could get the referrence number. He hold me for awhile, and then he get back to me saying he has no access on it. Instead he told me to wait for the letter. Anyone has the same experience like this? Are they doing this for security purpose? I read some members here got the referrence number over the phone to book their interview.
