Refugee - ILR - Passport??

Post by eshaaley » Tue Mar 05, 2013 9:33 pm

Dear Members and Admins,

Hope somebody can give me a clarification or break down. I have tried looking(honestly!!) for an identical query but have had no joy. Excuse my naivety..situation is,

I (myself and baby) claimed asylum years a go and received refugee status for 5 years. On completion we got ILR and now it has been 18 months. What is the next stage? Citizenship? If so, do I have to pass the Life In UK test? It is still not clear! Can some one make reference please..

I have to go on trip with my university next semester, I have no passport or travel document where do I start? And how long does this process (from ILR to passport) take, normally? :(

Sorry for a long query. I hope some one will be able to help/guide me. Thanks in advance :>

Kind Regards.

P.S - admins investing their time answering people, you lot do a very good job! Just to let you know, you are appreciated :)

If you had your ILR for 18 months, the best thing to do is apply for your citizenship.
Yes, you need to do the Life UK test as it wasn't a requirement for refugees when you were getting your ILR. But now that you will be applying for your citizenship you need to have either an EOSL citizenship certificate or if your English is good then you will need to pass the Life Uk test.

As for your trip, it depends how long you have before you need to travel. You can either apply for a Travel Document (but pls note waiting times can be 1month to over 6months). Or you can start the citizenship process and then apply for a uk passport. Again that can also take 1month to over 6months.

In your case, if you have several months before your trip, I would advice applying for your citizenship now. So you need to first pass the life Uk test then submit your application. You can either use a solicitor or the NCS to help you with the submission of the application. If your confident with your form filling you can prepare everything on your own and send it by post.

To give you an idea of the recent waiting time for people who went through the refugee route: 1month to 3months for approval. But please note according to UKBA it can take upto 6months.

Once you get your citizenship certificate, you will then apply for your British passport. Again it can take upto 6 weeks. But depending how straightforward your application some people get it in less then 3 or 4 weeks.

I hope that's been helpful. If u have any further questions don't hesitate to pm me.

Cheers
