Passport has only 5 months left

A friend wishes to apply for a spouse visa and wishes to submit the application at the end of March 2013 but her passport expires August 2013.

Is there any requirement for her to have longer on her passport before applying?

Why not just renew the passport and remove any doubt?

You must have a minimum of 6 months left in passport when applying for spouse visa. Best to make a new one before applying
