I need my passport during periods of visa extension

I am nearly finish my PhD course.
I sent my passport to extend my visa to UKBA.
Yesterday, I have finished my biometric.
In August, I will go the USA as Research Scholar.
This means that I should apply for my visa in the USA embassy, asap.
By the way, I read in ukba that it took between 4 and 14 weeks to receive my visa with my passport.
If I receive my passport in 5 weeks, it would be not a big problem.
If I receive 6 weeks later, it would make a problem.
In this case, could I receive my passport during periods of visa extension?

Simply no. You have to wait until you get you passport in your hand. Any return documents request my cancel your existing application.

I think (and hope) you will receive your possport soon as you are existing PhD student and already finished your biomatric also.
