A dependent of the EU Citizen

Post by the hurricane » Mon Mar 25, 2013 5:30 pm

Hi all,

I am helping my friend to fill out the visa application form for his dependent mother (he is an EU national. He is currently on holiday in Africa, and is planning to visit Dublin for 2 weeks with his mother). Since I am not really familiar with the Irish system, I would need your helps;

- On the e-form there is no option for dependent family member as it is on the Schengen visa form (only spouse or child of EU national). However, there is an option called “other” so I was wondering if that is the right option as long as I explain? Will that be ok?

- According to the Irish immigration website, a dependent family member is supposed to pay for the visa. If I am not mistaken under directive 2004/38/EC dependent family members are not supposed to pay for the visa as long as they can demonstrate that they are dependent of EU national. Does anyone know how this works in Ireland?

- I was also wondering if there is anyone that has successfully applied a short stay Irish visa for their dependent family member? If yes, which documents have you submitted to proof their dependency ( I know each case is different but I just wanna get an idea)?

A comment is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Your quote under directive 2004/38/EC is right but you should know that your case is rather called an "Extended Family Member" and can also be called"Other Family Member". Some comments regarding this will be up shortly though.

Thanks for your prompt response. I kinda agree with you but isn't if you get a visa under directive 2004/38/EC you are exempted from visa fees? I know it is the case with Schengen visa , why wouldn't be the case with Ireland ?

Because Ireland isnt part of Schengen? There are lots of things you could go in Schengen territory that you cannot do in Ireland
