Council Tax problem,, please help

Post by tsl » Wed Mar 27, 2013 11:02 pm

Hello ,

i have a problem with my council tax. i lived in a renting house for few years ,

my house mate was suppose o pay council tax and im to pay other bills.
but my house mate moved out then i found out that he did not pay any council tax through out the year. now council has been sending reminder letters for last few months and recently i have sent one letter back to sender.

then council send a form addressed to occupier to find out anyone lives in this property. i have put my name and my other house mate name on it in order to register our name to pay council tax onwards.

my question is would they include the previous bills on our name or would they find out that i have lived in this property previously .

please help

You were likely jointly liable for the council tax so you owe half of the outstanding debt. But they'll chase you for the lot. You must not put the ex housemates name if he's not resident. If you're aloe you can get the single persons discount. Go to the cab and they'll help you sort it out, are you a student?

You were likely jointly liable for the council tax so you owe half of the outstanding debt. But they'll chase you for the lot as you should inform them how long you're been resident. You must not put the ex housemates name if he's not resident. If you're alone you can get the single persons discount. Go to the cab and they'll help you sort it out, are you a student?

Like I say you would have been liable before, it is your responsibility to inform the local authority. If you don't inform them it's likely that they'll not chase you. However, legally you should explain you were liable if you were responsible for the council tax see - http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/england/t ... il_tax.htm

If you do not inform them they you may escape the previous charges however, you are legally responsible to do so and if found out could face criminal prosecution. If you are struggling you can make an arrangement with the local authority, contact your local cab for help.
