Guidance on renewal of passprt

Hi. I'm on Tier 2 General Visa but my Indian passport expires on Oct. 2013. My Tier 2 G visa is till July 2015. When should I get my passport renewed? Should I get it done now or nearer the expiry time?

Many thanks. I take it there is no particular time (6 months before expiry etc) to apply for re-issue/renewal. Would my old passport be returned to me?
