I was married in my home country in 2000. I then separated in 2004, and the official divorce came through in 2006.
I first visited the UK in 2006, and was travelling on a newly issued passport, which was in my 'maiden' name. I had never travelled to the UK under my married name.
In 2007 I moved to the UK on a WHV (Work Holiday Visa), which was issued to me in my 'maiden' name. Upon arrival, I registered for a NI Number, attended the appointment, showed them my ID (passport), and received my NI card in the post some weeks later - again, in my maiden name.
Since then I have worked as a contractor, then got a 'Work Permit (employer sponsored)' visa - and for all of that time, I have been known only as my maiden name. I have never had ID in my married name in this country.
However, very strangely, I recently received a tax refund cheque from HMRC in the post, to my address (where I've lived for 3+ years), quoting my NI Number, but addressed to my MARRIED name!!!!
I called HMRC, and they have told me that they have only ever had my married name on their records! I find this impossible to believe, as I've never been known as that name in this country, nor have I had ANY kind of ID with that name on it, in this country.
HMRC say they will investigate it....I'll post back here if I ever get a response!
