Family based visa while living overseas?

Has anybody heard of getting a foreign Spouse a family based visa while you were living abroad?

Seems all the scenarios I read about consist of the US national living in the US, applying to bring their foreign spouse in.

I'm curious to find out some of the caveats we might encounter, for example Affidavit of Support..
