hurdles to jump when marrying a Romanian national

Post by mantradonis » Sat May 18, 2013 10:03 pm

Hi folks
I am a british citizen and my partner is romanian, but she does not currently live here.I am wanting to ask her to marry me and I was seeking advice on the hurdles that we may face if she agrees. Financially I can support her, have my own home, there maybe 2 children involved but that is a separate issue as she does not have custody at this time, one is shortly 18 and the other is only 9 years old so you will gather we are not stupid youngsters.

Any info or advice would be welcomed before I pop the question.

Thanks in advance

As you must be aware, Romania entered the EU in 2007 and gained visa-free access to the UK. Work restrictions for Romanians are due to be lifted at the end of this year. Therefore, I would suggest that any 'hurdles' would be personal ones rather than an immigration matter.

Yes i concur. Notwithstanding the fact that transitional restrictions are due to be lifted at the end of the year, a Romanian national married to a biritsh national, will have unrestricted access to the Uk Labour market.

Thanks to both of the respondents for your advice. Just one other question then....if we marry and there are no personal issues does this mean that we need not to apply for any kind of visa, card or permit as she will be married to a british citizen? I know to you that this may seem a silly question but I have found it a bit like a maze trying to understand all of the info on the UKBA site, nothing seems quite straight forward.
Again appreciate any info, thanks

You don't need to apply for a visa for your future wife as she already has visa-free entry into the UK as an EU national. This is whether you're married or not.
