Work permit to tier 2 further extn

Hi Gurus
Have a friend applying for tier 2 extension , he needs 6 more months for ILR his time line is as below
work permit 15/1/2009 to 15/7/2010 then tier 2 until 17/7/2013

1) can he apply under 'Extension of leave using form T2(W)
2) what's the maximum stay he can apply for? I am assuming 6 years!

Just a quick note my friend was transfered under tupe in march 2012 but didnt have to apply with the new sponsor,is it considered to be the same employer for 'Extension of leave using form T2(W)
