Benefit for a married FT student?

Post by Ged » Mon May 27, 2013 11:28 am

Hello everyone,
Me and my wife are both on ILR. I am on full time employment (£39.000 PA). She has been with me in the UK for 3 years, but she has never worked in the UK. She is now interested in taking up a full-time master course which is likely to help her start working here. I understand we can benefit from a small reduction in our council tax bill when she becomes a FT student. I also saw somewhere that we may get a "means tested benefit". My salary is our sole income between us both. She is not getting any student support. Currently we are only able to hop between credit card payment deadlines. So it will be very hard paying for her fees. Would my income allow any one of us to access to some benefits once she becomes a FT student?

You may be eligible for a council tax discount if your wife becomes exempt for the council tax. However, given your income, it's unlikely that you'll be entitled to any means tested benefits. Perhaps consider a career development loan?

Thanks Amber,
I will consider career development loan option.
