.

If you wish to be self-employed / freelance, options are very nearly zero.

Generally, you need an employer or some sort of sponsor.

Your country of origin can be important.

Do you have religious or other unique cultural experience to contribute? Maybe you can come in sponsored by a university as a lecturer that just happens to be writing ...

If you operate your own business in another country, you can effectively import yourself temporarily.

What type of writing ...? Journalism? Novels? Poetry? Screenwriting? Each of these possibilities would require a different approach. Can you make the case that you are performing journalism, either for a U.S. company or a foreign organization?

Generally speaking, you need to make a case that your talents are highly skilled and somewhat unique. It's easier if you can show some regular, tax-paying employment, have no criminal history of any sort, etc.

The real trick is to be allowed to perform paid work legally, as opposed to being allowed to visit but not work.

This is for artists/performers/athletes, but the discussion and definition of terms may help :

Culturally unique means a style of artistic expression, methodology, or medium which is unique to a particular country, nation, society, class, ethnicity, religion, tribe, or other group of persons.
Internationally recognized means having a high level of achievement in a field evidenced by a degree of skill and recognition substantially above that ordinarily encountered, to the extent that such achievement is renowned, leading, or well-known in more than one country.
Sponsor means an established organization in the United States which will not directly employ a P-1, P-2, or P-3 alien but will assume responsibility for the accuracy of the terms and conditions specified in the petition.
Just some thoughts off the top of my head.

More details about exactly what you are thinking would help to refine your options.
