It will soon be an year since the 9th July rules, restricting rights of British and migrant families who have family ties outside the EEA, came into force. Since then some very hard earned progress has been made to bring the unfair and discriminatory nature of these rules into the spotlight through the APPG's inquiry.
A lot of this forums members have been affected by these rules. Some have not; not yet. I would like to call ALL members of this forum to please help us fight the rules. If you have been affected, please do not wait for others to fight for you. If you have not been affected yet, I urge you to understand the impact of these rules and ask for yourself if, on principle, you can support such rules?
This is also a chance for migrants and British citizens to stand united against these rules, because they effect everyone legally resident in the UK.
The government is aware the rules are unfair and a lot of their immigration policy is a sham, but they are sticking to their rote statements that their policy is protecting the public purse and helping genuine immigrants into the UK. In reality the rules simply reduce immigration numbers disregarding entirely the painful stories of the real and genuine people behind the numbers.
There will be a debate in Parliament to discuss these rules next Wednesday, 19th June. You can help by writing to your MP, making them aware that you oppose the rules. If you are affected, describe your case. A template letter is provided that you can copy and paste to your MP. It will take less than 5 minutes of your time. Please help us in our fight, such an opportunity may not come again.
For those of you concerned with the impact of immigration on benefits or NHS, please understand that immigration rules do not allow access to public funds for 5 years from date of entry to non-EEA nationals. This remains unchanged. If NHS or the benefits are being abused by certain persons, then that represents a problem with the NHS administration or the benefits system respectively, not the UK immigration policy. There are many hard working immigrant families in the UK, as there are British. Persons who abuse the system can be of any origin, and systems that can be abused as such need tightening.
