Income Tax Return and child and work tax credit

Post by techguy007 » Wed Jun 19, 2013 5:00 pm

Dear all,

Few weeks back i received a working and child tax credit form by post after calling the HMR helpline where I filled my fiancée and my income details and posted back.

Today my fiancée received a cheque for income refund around £900.(2012/2013 tax year)

1) Is that refund related to working tax credit?
2) Since the claim is a joint claim will I not receive any tax credit refund? My name was not mentioned in the letter.
3) What about child tax credit? Will we get a separate letter regarding the child tax credit or are we not eligible?

Pls note my fiancee stopped working since Aug 2012. She is only receiving
a maternity allowance from the government.
Both of our income for 2012/2013 approx £25,500.

Thank you in advance

A tax refund is nothing to do with tax credits. The tax refund is because too much tax was paid in a tax year, perhaps because of unemployment or maternity leave. If you think you paid too much tax in a previous tax year give the HMRC and they can look into this for you.

What is your immigration status? The tax credit notification should state what amount of child tax credit and on the other page the working tax credit.

Hi,

We both have ILR. Only thing we did was to fill the pack we received from HRM after calling them.

Do you think we will get further correspondence regarding the child and work tax credit.

**** The only letter we recived was Tax calculation 2012/2013. It only says that she is entitled to a repayment of income tax for the year 2012/2013.
Nothing about child or work tax credit mentioned. But there is line stating "My calculation of this amount has been sent to you separately" Maybe we will receive another letter soon.

Thanks

You will get a decision once they have assessed your application pack. The decision will be on a notification giving both child and working tax credit amounts. You have 30 days to appeal a decision if you think it's wrong.
