10 months in advance for UK General visitor visa

My mother-in-law who stays in India wants to visit us next year while on her way back from 6 months US visit. As she intends to apply for visa from India, we are planning to make an application in September 2013 for travel dates in May 2014. Is this arrangement permissible under 6 month UK General visitor visa category?
Suggestions are welcome.

visa normally starts from the date of approval but you can request to postpone the start date by upto 3 months
