Passport app - sending in all passports - dual nationality

Post by hausboy2 » Mon Jul 08, 2013 1:26 pm

Hi all!

First of all, I've searched the forums for the answers to these questions, and no luck so far. So I'm going to ask them. If they are located somewhere, please let me know where, rather than flaming me :D

My situation: I have dual citizenship of NZ and Oz, and thus have 2x passports. I also have an expired NZ passport with my original date of entry into the UK. I am applying for a British passport following naturalisation.

2 things are unclear to me:

1) It seems pretty clear at least that I need to send in my current passport and my expired NZ passport at least. However, its not clear whether or not I need to send in my Australian passport too. I travel fortnightly for work (overseas) and so its very inconvenient to have to send them all away. Does anyone know why HM Passport Office need ALL the passports? I heard that it was to prevent you from travelling in the meantime, which seems a bit odd.

2) Lets say that I send in both my NZL passports, and hang on to my Aus one so I can travel. Will I be able to renter the Uk on my Australian passport, as long as I present my BRP wit ILR visa on it? I'm worried as the BRP says I am a New Zealander. It would be pretty easy to take proof of my dual nationality with me of course.

Thanks so much for any support or advice anyone can provide! this board seems to be a very helpful source of information.

D

The form asks for all current passports. I would include both NZ and Oz passports.

Expired NZ passport, that you used for first entry, is not required (because you are applying on the basis of naturalisation).

When they say all uncancelled passport, then you should send all uncancelled passports, simple. No point being dishonest and trying to be clever for a trivial matter. Find a window of about 2 weeks when you are not traveling and send your application by special delivery. Also choose DX secure delivery (costs £ 3) for return of your documents.

thanks, I think you are probably right - I have a window of 20 days Jul-Aug where I'm not travelling - I am just feeling panicky about them getting the dox back to me in time, as the trip I need to take in August is absolutely non-negotiable.... seems dox get returned usually 2-3 weeks.

you also need to attend a passport interview - so plan your trips accordingly.
