Unemployed

Post by Blythman » Mon Jul 15, 2013 12:04 am

I am a 57 year old Englishman who is unemployed. I am thinking of coming to live in Ireland. Would I be able to claim Jobseekers allowance and rent assistence till I find work?

If you are currently on jobseekers allowance, I think its possible to transfer it to Ireland

You are entitled to JSA and housing benefit, the housing benefit process in Ireland is takes time, so it will be better to save some money before travelling.

I think it is jobseekers BENEFIT that you can transfer from one country to another. I don't think you can do this with allowance paymenets.

You are subject to the habitual residence condition.

If you have previously lived in Ireland you should apply to an organisation called 'Safe Home'. This is for people who were living in Ireland, moved to the UK and want to come home in retirement/as they get older. Anyone who comes home under 'Safe home' programme is not subject to the habitual residence condition.
