To sell my house or not!!!

Post by sip » Thu Mar 01, 2007 10:46 pm

I am moving to the UK in the summer to undertake a college course and I was wondering if it would be better to show immigration in the UK that I own a property in the USA. I understand that once I complete my course that I have to return to the USA. I will be staying with my partner in the UK and we have discussed making this arrangement permenant in the near future. IF I do sell my property in the US then it will help to raise the funds required for my course and living expenses but in turn, it will mean that technicaly, I have no fixed address in the USA.

At present I have a potential purchaser on the property but I am unsure as to weather to complete/close the purchase before or after moving to the UK

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best course of action to take here as I need to apply for my visa soon.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

I'm sure that wiser voices than mine will give you more informed advice, but based on my experience, I'm inclined to think that they will be more interested in what you have in the bank than what you own in the US. Eventually the HO will want to see that you have significant ties to the UK; money in a British bank account and a British degree (in addition to the obvious fact that you have a British partner) would certainly count. Property in the US would not. If they do ask you for an address in the States you could always use your parents' or a sibling's address.

Good luck!
