Why don't you have your biometric card?
When was your son born?

drpbalaji1960: The UK Border Agency (UKBA) only started issuing biometric residence permits for ILR from 29th Feb 2012. You must have got your ILR before this date.

There is no difference in ILR on a passport or in the form of Biometric Card.

If your son was born after you got your ILR, you can apply for his British Passport directly. But if he was born before you got your ILR, then you will need to register him as a British Citizen first using form MN1.

Reading Citizenship FAQs would also help.

Thank you linkers for your valuable advice and putting my mind at rest.

my son was born in june 2013 and shortly in a week's time, i'm applying for his british passport.

I was very worried that I would have difficulties as I didn't have the biometric card.

Do I need to apply for the biometric card in the future.

once again thank you for giving advice.

drpbalaji1960: That's no problem.

No you never need to apply for Biometric ILR card. Even if your current passport expires, you can carry your old passport with your new passport for the purpose of travel.

Only the people who are issued ILRs on Biometric Cards would need to apply for new cards every 10 years (if they choose not to obtain British Citizenship by then). But for someone like you who has ILR on the passport, you don't need to apply for BRP.

If your passport is lost in future, only then UKBA will issue you the ILR on BRP as they no longer issue it on passports.
