indian visitors visa - stay longer than 180 days

Hi all
can my son( british passport) travelling to india by visitors visa(6 months) by chance happen to stay longer than 180 days. is this allowed, if so what is the procedure please.

has anyone had similar experience.

visitor visa is only for 6 months stay - FRRO do extend for short term on case by case basis - however these should be treated as an exception and not a standard process.

ban.s: thank you for your quick reply.

one of my friend said we could apply for PIO card in india for staying on visitor visa for longer than 6 months. my understating was even with pio card you are allowed only 6 months max stay.

yes, PIO application can be lodged in India - with PIO you can stay longer than 6 month - there is no max limit on stay as long as the PIO card is valid. However if the stay exceeds 6 months then the person needs to register with FRRO. Minors are exempted from registration.
