visa valid with cancelled passport?

I'm applying for a new visa at the moment, but now have to travel and need a passport. My passport is currently at the border agency with my application. I have spoken to the Australian embassy about getting emergency travel documents and I was told they have to cancel my current passport if I want these documents. So I'm wondering, if I apply for this and get emergency travel documents or a new passport, will my visa still be valid in my old passport? as in could I take both documents with me for future travels and show my visa in my old one and use my new passport still? I'm renewing my tier 2 visa.

Yes, your Visa would still be valid in your old passport - though, if the passport was expired when they come to actually processing your Visa, you might have a problem.

Ie. Once the Visa is processed, if your passport was cancelled, you could still use that Visa in the expired passport, just travelling with your new passport. HOWEVER, if your passport is already cancelled once they come to processing the Visa application, the application would be refused.
