Please help- Need clarification on 6 year visa limit?

Post by fleursdumal » Fri Jul 26, 2013 11:39 am

So you are allowed to stay and work in the UK under tier 2 general for a maximum of 6 years correct? And after 5 years if you're making 35k per year you are eligible to apply for leave to remain?

My question is, what if your employer takes you on under these conditions: 1 year contract with possibility of renewal.

Currently on post-study work visa (8 months left) and need to switch however if I do go with this employer and they decide to sponsor me, my tier 2 visa end date will be 1 year from now so just a few extra months.

If before the 1 year is over and they decide to take me on for an extra year then I have to go through the whole application process again to have my stay lengthened correct?

Lets say my employer decides to renew my contract every year for the next 6 years, will I have to renew the visa each time for 6 years?

Is the 6 years even valid for people who are offered renewable contract jobs or is it only for those offered 'permanent' jobs?

Thank you in advance for your help.

technically yes to everything..

first u will get only 4 months extra visa, but at least, if u have not been uk for quite lon, then ur 5 year clock will start ticking. .

yes if easch contract is for 1 year then u will get visa for 1 year each time and will have to apply again with new application, COS, and visa fee

Yes it is allowed and can be renewed for up to 6 years.

Sorry not sure I fully understand..
What do you mean if I haven't been in the UK for long?

And when I reapply each time do I need to have 900 in my account for 3 months etc etc?

The previous poster was indicating that if you have 'not been here long', ie over 5 years already, then you will start your ILR clock and will not be going for 10 year long residence ILR.

When you reapply, as the rules stand, you will not need to meet maintenance or language requirements. But who knows, things could change....
