EEA Family Permit

Post by Noz03 » Sun Jul 28, 2013 8:12 pm

I am a British Citizen and recently married with a Turkish citizenu in Turkey, and planning to go to several countries in Europe next month. I heard we can just show up at the boarder but I'm sure that in the best case we will be stuck there for hours while people wonder what the hell they should do so I wanted to get an EU/EEA family permit for her before we go.

So on Friday I went to a bunch of European consulates in Izmir (Turkey) who all knew nothing about this kind of permit... after being sent from one consulate to another I finally ended up at a visa application centre who told me I would have to wait 2 weeks and it would cost around €45.

Everything I have read about this permit says that it should be for free and given as quickly and easily as possible. Am I being cheated or how can I get this permit quickly and cheap/freely?

EEA Family Permit is a UK only term for an entry clearance. For Schengen countries, what you need to apply is short term visa which is issued free of charge for family members of EU nationals. Your partner also doesn't need to answer the questions marked with * in the application form. The only supporting documents required are marriage certificate and both passports.

Thanks, this was exactly the kind of solid info I needed. It says very clearly in this book that it is my wife's right not to pay any fee, and to receive the visa as quickly as possible. But we went to 3 consulates who either refused or sent us to a visa application centre that wanted to charge us. And the application centre also said it would take around 2 weeks. I am planning to visit the British consulate tomorrow but as this type of visa actually permits her to visit any EU country EXCEPT the UK I'm not quite sure if they will be any more helpful than the others :(

Any suggestions what I should do?
As family members should not pay any fee when submitting the application, they cannot be obliged to obtain an appointment via a premium call line or via an external provider whose services are charged to the applicant. Family members must be allowed to lodge their application directly at the consulate without any costs.
However, if family members decide not to make use of their right to lodge their application directly at the consulate but to use the extra services, they should pay for these services. If an appointment system is nevertheless in place, separate call lines (at ordinary local tariff) to the consulate should be put at the disposal of family members respecting comparable standards to those of "premium lines", i.e. the availability of such lines should be of standards comparable to those in place for other categories of applicants and an appointment must be allocated without delay.

Well, you are British and as you know Britain is not part of the Schengen agreement so they can't issue you a visa for those countries.

It might be that because the consulates are small, they are not familiar with the process. Try to check the main consulates websites.

Have you checked the German consulate in Izmir website for information? It clearly states there the visa is free.

See German consulate. Check section 3 in the PDF on the webpage.
