Start by reading the guidance book. See this threadNoz03 wrote:I am a British Citizen and recently married with a Turkish citizenu in Turkey, and planning to go to several countries in Europe next month. I heard we can just show up at the boarder but I'm sure that in the best case we will be stuck there for hours while people wonder what the hell they should do so I wanted to get an EU/EEA family permit for her before we go.
So on Friday I went to a bunch of European consulates in Izmir (Turkey) who all knew nothing about this kind of permit... after being sent from one consulate to another I finally ended up at a visa application centre who told me I would have to wait 2 weeks and it would cost around €45.
Everything I have read about this permit says that it should be for free and given as quickly and easily as possible. Am I being cheated or how can I get this permit quickly and cheap/freely?

Thanks, this was exactly the kind of solid info I needed. It says very clearly in this book that it is my wife's right not to pay any fee, and to receive the visa as quickly as possible. But we went to 3 consulates who either refused or sent us to a visa application centre that wanted to charge us. And the application centre also said it would take around 2 weeks. I am planning to visit the British consulate tomorrow but as this type of visa actually permits her to visit any EU country EXCEPT the UK I'm not quite sure if they will be any more helpful than the othersEUsmileWEallsmile wrote: Start by reading the guidance book. As family members should not pay any fee when submitting the application, they cannot be obliged to obtain an appointment via a premium call line or via an external provider whose services are charged to the applicant. Family members must be allowed to lodge their application directly at the consulate without any costs.
However, if family members decide not to make use of their right to lodge their application directly at the consulate but to use the extra services, they should pay for these services. If an appointment system is nevertheless in place, separate call lines (at ordinary local tariff) to the consulate should be put at the disposal of family members respecting comparable standards to those of "premium lines", i.e. the availability of such lines should be of standards comparable to those in place for other categories of applicants and an appointment must be allocated without delay.
Well, you are British and as you know Britain is not part of the Schengen agreement so they can't issue you a visa for those countries.Noz03 wrote:Also want to ask, is it possible to get this kind of visa from my own countries consulate? even though I wont be travelling to that country?
