Surrendering Indian passport in India and apply for OCI card

Post by SKulanthaivel » Fri Aug 02, 2013 6:56 pm

Dear All,

I got my ILR on Jan 3rd 2013 and will be eligible for applying for Citizenship from Jan 4th 2014. But i have to be in India for longer time now, at least a year and half due to personal reason, but to keep my eligibility to apply for citizenship, i.e not to cross 90 days this year.

1) I have planned to stay in UK till first week of October and return back to UK by Jan 1.

2) Apply for naturalization in Jan 1st week and travel back to India and return back to attend the ceremony function and get the citizenship certificate.

3) Apply for British passport in UK and wait and get the British passport. (Assuming, i will get the British passport soon (ie., within 3 months from naturalization) and i should be eligible to travel back to india with indian passport and British passport).

4) Travel back to India using Indian Passport.

5) Surrender the Indian passport and apply for OCI card from India itself.

I saw few queries related to my case, ie., TRAVELLING WITH INDIAN PASSPORT AFTER NATURALIZATION, surrendering indian passport in india and apply for OCI CARD. But please bare with me, for putting my query related to this.

I am little bit worried and tensed due to my current situation. But like to try and get the British citizenship and OCI card, if i have understood the steps i have to go through to achieve this. Please provide your comments and suggestions. Eagerly waiting for your response.

Thanks,
Kulanthaivel S

I would suggest after you receive your british passport, plan to stay in the UK further a week or so, surrender your indian passport, apply for indian visa and then travel to india and apply for OCI.

Thanks Ban.s for quick reply.

So you suggest, going with a valid Indian visa and apply for OCI card from India is safe. And there should be any problem in doing so, right.

Thanks,

OCI application from India is a straight forward process as long as you enter with a valid visa.

Entering with Indian passport and renunciation of citizenship in India is not advisable and you'll potentially face significant issues with FRROs.
