does my non EU wife need a visa to travel to UK ?

Post by bazzare » Mon Aug 05, 2013 9:06 pm

I have been offered a job on Switzerland and need to apply for a swiss dependent visa for my wife can join me there.

But due to the fact that there is no longer any Swiss Embassy consular section in Dublin since last year, it means all visa applications are now processed in London.

But does this mean that we also have to apply for a visa for my wife that she can enter the UK also. ? ( that seems crazy !!.. we will have to apply for 2 separate visas )

My wife has a stamp 4 INIS card and re-entry visa and has been living and working in Ireland almost one year so what I want to know is it possible for us to just show up at Dublin Airport and fly to the UK.

Or will the airlines demand to see that she has a visa to enter the UK Border, but we can also check in using those machines that print you the boarding card.

As I understand it, there is no passport control between Ireland and Britain and that as we are within the common travel area , she wont require any visa.

How long would it take for her UK travel visa to be processed, would it cost anything or is it free ?

Would we be taking a huge risk to try and travel there without a visa. ?

While there is not formal border control, las time I flew from Dublin to Stansted they still had staff having a quick look at people's passports and opening them to look for a visa for countries which require one. One the other hand I have also being flying to the UK a few times with no border check at all, so it depends on your luck (and if they do check, they will expect her to have a visa)

Having said that:
1) If you are an EU citizen, your wife should be issue a UK visa for free and pretty easily
2) Does she really need to get to the Swiss embassy in person? Usually if an embassy is remote they will accept postal application or let you bring the application documents on her behalf

As others said, check with the embassy as to whether they will accept postal applications.

The Irish residence card would not be accepted by the UK in lieu of visa. That said, it is possible to argue your case at a border post. You are not likely to encounter a border due to common travel area.

Switzerland does not accept Irish issued article 10 residence cards due to an anomaly. The rest of the Schengen zone would, example you could use it to travel to France, Italy, Germany, etc.

It may be possible to enter Switzerland via another Schengen state and apply for residency directly in Switzerland. Care, the directive, does not apply in Switzerland. Similar provisions do exist, but they are not identical.
