NHS asks for VISA and Passport

I am on my Tier 1 General Migrant Visa.
My wife is pregnant and first appointment with midwife was booked a couple of weeks back from a GP in London.
Appointment is tomorrow. ANd a lady called from NHS and she enquired what are you to this lady and when did she arrive in this country and on what visa are you in and are you working now ?

THEN she said i will have to bring in my passport, my wife's passport and my recent salary slip (one month) before i go to appointment. When i said i have never such a thing before, she said it is new and she said she will text me the details immediately after the call. And there was a text which said you will have to come to so and so place (which is in the same place of appointment which she told me the call) before the appointment, failing to produce the document will lead to payment of fees. And the SMS ended with "Overseas Team".

Is this a normal procedure in NHS ? Please confirm.
