I've claimed child tax credit on 7th August 2013 ,both me and my wife has ILR now but when i applied my wife did not have ILR.my wife does not have a NINO so I left it blank ,I phoned HMRC several times and they told they will check about my wife as she does not have a NINO ,now after 1 month they have send a form asking for both of our passport /BRP card and have informed in we don't reply before 9th Oct 2013 they will take the decision with the information provided and it might effect the benefit amount. I've now booked a NINO appointment for my wife this week. I will be travelling in October so I wont be able to send my passport. I am just wondering why HMRC is asking for passports ,what should I do now.

To verify your identity, you can send certified copies for the interim period and explain that you're travelling so need your passport but that you'll send your passport in as soon as you return if required.

I expect so, they do normally send passports back rather quickly, but it's not guaranteed. A copy is unlikely to be accepted but may buy you some time. A notary public or solicitor can certify documents.

You may still be asked for the originals but if you explain you are travelling it should suffice for the interim period. Or you can take the risk and send the originals (by recorded delivery) in the hope they return by the time you want to travel.
