Surinder Singh route - Meaningful work

Post by Graham Weifang » Wed Sep 11, 2013 11:37 am

Hi all,

We are currently in northern Germany, where I am exercising my treaty rights by living and working in a European country (state, other than my own (UK)

I have looked on internet, and I don't seem to find a fixed figure which determines "Meaningful work" by UKBA.

Would 40 hours per month, for 3 months, at an hourly rate of just over minimum basic wage constitute as "meaningful work"

Of course, all taxes is being paid on this earnings.

GW.

Hi Graham, the minimum number of hours per week is 12 to classify it as meaningful.

I can't remember the source of this statement but this subject is a common discussion on Surinder Singh discussion sites and 12 is the common number.

See http://eumovement.wordpress.com/2011/12 ... -a-worker/

As with the 3/6 months "rule", there is no real threshold.

Hi Jambo,

This seems to be another grey area that no real values have been set, or perhaps, could be set.

It simply mentions 10 to 12 hours a week.
However, there is no mention of rate of pay.

Perhaps a worker working 5 hours a week at €20.00 per hour, (€100.00 per week) could be classed as doing a more meaningful work, than say another worker, working 12 hours per week at €8.00 an hour.(€96.00 per week).

How on earth could the "meaningful work" level be determined?

GW.

My advice would be to avoid the grey area or you might need the help of the courts.
